Favorite Autism Blogs
I have some great Autism blogs for you to check out and follow if you are not following them already...
Confessions of an Asperger's Mom: This mom has not just one, but two teenage sons with Asperger's. She is striving to help the world to understand her boys and the world they are living in and to stop judging them for it. When I read her posts, I can always identify with her feeling and emotions and so many of the things her boys say and do. She has a great Facebook page that offers lots of support and a place to drop in and sometimes complain when you need to. We all need a place for that, don't we?!!
Red Vines and Wine: Dawn, the mom who writes this blog, has a 4th grader with Asperger's, just like I do. She has a great sense of humor and is proud of her kids. Follow her any way you choose and you won't regret it. The laughs are plentiful!
Four Plus an Angel: This blog offers a little of everything; a mom blog, a blog about a teen with autism, toddlers, fertility issues, pregnancy with triplets, then losing one of those babies as an infant. Like most of us, Jessica has found a voice through blogging and finding an inner peace and strength by sharing what she and her family has been through, telling their stories, so that others can learn. There was an interesting post the other day about autism through her teen daughter's eyes. I found this so interesting because I had just asked my 10 year old son if he could tell me what it was like and he was not able. What a role model this daughter has in her mother. Please stop by and let Jessica know that I sent you!
Autisable: Autisable is actually an online community to connect people affected by Autism. You can sign up for a free account, submit a post, read posts and comment on them, and vote on posts that you like. You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter. It is a great resource for Autism.

Spring Break Schedule
We are officially on Spring Break at my house. That means 10 days of kids at home! They think they are just going to sit around and play video games all day...but I have learned the hard way that I have to make a schedule and stick to it! I have tried over holidays and summers and it usually just falls by the wayside, but I have to keep trying. If Ethan could be in school year-round I would have him there, but the closest I can do I try to give him a similar schedule, while still allowing him a break and giving him some fun.
I had both of my boys write down a list of things they wanted to do while we were out for Spring Break. Some of the things they wanted to do were simple, like go to Wal-Mart. So, I tried to incorporate all of their wishes into our calendar, along with the other things we already had on the calendar.
One of the things I really wanted to keep up during this week off was some math, reading and writing. Ethan has his EOG's coming up at school next month and can use the practice. Jonah also needs some math and writing practice and I definitely did not want the struggle of getting them back into homework again when school starts. A few educational games and worksheets is not going to hurt any child, despite what mine might think!

This is an example of what I have made for each of my boys...one for each day they are out, including weekends! Fights and frustrations are on those days, too, so I do everything I can to head it off! I try to keep things fun and easy, not too hard, but I also know what my kids will and will not do. So, given that many of my choices or days were not that full and may have given one child more choices than another or one child more activities than another. Hopefully, this will help our Spring Break to be a little more peaceful than time off has been in the past.

Barnes and Noble has many new apps available for their Nook that would be useful for the child with Autism. Previously, apps like these were only available on iPods or iPads so now that they are becoming more available on electronics like androids and Nooks, it can make things easier for us parents! World Autism Awareness Day
Today is World Autism Awareness Day. In the Autism Community, this day means different things to different people. To some people it means raising money for a cure. To others it means simple getting the word "autism" out. To others, it might be just about wearing blue, or having a blue light on...or a variety of other things.
For me, I never asked for or expected a cure. I don't want to change Ethan from the way he is right now...I might want a little help with math or maybe with the importance of picking things up off the floor, but over all, things are fine. What we do need is more education for teachers in how to deal with kids with autism/asperger's, more training for health professionals (yeah, even some of them are not familiar with how to deal with patients with special needs!), more training for police, fire department, emergency personnel, etc. I would love for us to get to a point where we do not notice the autism, just the person. DIFFERENT...NOT LESS!!!!

Autism on the Screen
In some parts of the world, it is already April 2, World Autism Awareness Day. There are buildings and landmarks worldwide that have pledged to Light It Up Blue in an effort to help spread Autism Awareness. I managed to find one picture already...the Parliament Building in Budapest, Hungary.
Barnes & Noble has some DVD's that feature Autism on the big screen I wanted to share with you. If you haven't caught Parenthood on TV, it has been a good series where one of the children in the family is diagnosed with Asperger's and the family has to learn to deal with it. Temple Grandin, of course, was a wonderful movie and Claire Danes did a great job acting in this movie. I have yet to see the movie The Horse Boy, but the book was so great. It is so wonderful when a studio is willing to take a chance on a story like this...of course, there are many great stories about those of us who have children with Autism have gone through in our travels through life.
